‘Orace ‘Oskins

I’d have been three or four but not a lot more just a kid playing out in the sun
When out of the blue the sky clouded over and flash bang I thought that my last day had come
I shot straight indoors like a whippet with the demons of hell on my heels
I was caught by me Mum and swung up in her arms, she said son you’ve got nothing to fear

Chorus:
It’s just ‘Orace ‘Oskins tipping his bricks Just ‘Orace ‘Oskins up to his tricks
And the flashes are only the sparks from the picks of his big Irish labouring men
It’s just ‘Orace ‘Oskins tipping his bricks It’s just uncle ‘Orace again

And later when crashes and ‘lectric blue flashes came hurtling out of the sky
I’d run to the window and watch as the lightening fizzled and flashed and passed harmlessly by
And all through my childhood when thunderstorms came and the air filled with rumbles and cracks
I felt no more fear or shed one more tear cuz the one thing I knew for a fact

I got a bit older and grew a bit bolder and learned lots of science and such
About cold fronts and warm fronts and big static charges and light’ning conductors you never should touch
And I thought if I ever have children I’ll explain and I’ll tell them the truth
I won’t have to rely on old stories and tales, I’ll just give them the facts and the proof (not)

I’d have been thirty four but not a lot more with the kids playing out in the sun
When out of the blue the sky clouded over and flash bang they scuttled inside at the run
I explained about cold fronts and warm fronts in that smug way that only dads can
Then they says to his nibs there’s no need to tell fibs cuz you know we’ve been talking to gran
